To help explain the differences among various refrigerators, we compared eight companies’ most-basic stainless steel bottom-freezer models that are approximately 36 inches wide. Freestanding fridges—units with finished sides that can be rolled directly into an opening—are both the least expensive and the deepest option. Counter-depth fridges (sometimes called cabinet-depth) are sleeker because they sit flush with countertop edges. Because the cooling system needed for a fridge as shallow as 24 inches is more expensive, they can cost several hundred dollars more. Built-in fridges, which are completely integrated into the cabinetry, cost the most because they vent from the top, and the specialized cooling system is expensive to manufacture.

Except where noted, the models below are energy-efficient and carry the Energy Star label, which indicates that a fridge uses at least 15 percent less electricity than federal standards require. An icemaker is standard unless otherwise noted. —Additional reporting by Rachel Soszynski
