Washington’s most celebrated independent bookstore has been open for more than 30 years, and it’s still the best place in town for a good, old-fashioned browse. A vast and eclectic selection is assertively diverse; as well as the latest politics and punditry, you’ll find books here—like politically progressive children’s books and Italian detective stories—that you may not find anywhere else. The enthusiastic sales staff will answer any questions you have, and then some. After you’ve made your selection, sit down and read it over a cup of joe or some crab cakes (watch those sticky fingers) at Afterwords, the full-service café in back.
